TEST RULES:

All tests must be taken in the MTLC.

1.   There are four 50-minute tests and a 150-minute mandatory, comprehensive Final Exam. Test dates are listed on the front page of this information guide.

2.   You may take your tests early: “Early” means by the Monday of the week containing its deadline (or by the Friday of deadweek for the final). You may not begin a test if the MTLC is scheduled to close before the end of your full allotted time: usually you must begin by 4:45pm Mon – Thursday, or by 3pm on Friday (2pm for the Final Exam).

3.       You will be taking your four 50 minute tests during your class time on the dates as noted on the front page of this information guide.  You will register online for a final exam day and time.  The front page of the information guide lists beginning and ending dates/times for online registration for the final exam. To register online, go to the MTLC website (www.mtlc.ua.edu), select Test Registration, log in as instructed, select Register, then choose an available time. You may freely cancel or change your test time while online registration is open. Be sure to verify your registration: log back in to the test registration site.

4.   Arrive on time for your test. Tardiness will cost you working time on the test. Bring your ID and pencils with you. Staff will check your ID and give you a test paper (which is your initial scratch paper), then direct you to your seat.

5.   The Casio FX-260-Solar School scientific calculator is the only hand-held electronic device allowed during testing. All calculator covers must be removed and put out of sight during testing. Use of any unapproved technological device during a test will be treated as academic misconduct. No help with the calculator will be given during tests.  No calculator will be available on the computer for use during testing.

6.   Cellphones must be turned completely off and placed with all other belongings on the floor. Apple watches must be put away.  Either physically holding or concealing your cellphone, Apple watch, or other unapproved technological device during the test will be treated as academic misconduct.

7.   As soon as you are seated, you may begin your exam. The MTLC will give you additional scratch paper as needed; no other paper is allowed. When you are finished, take all your papers to the lab entrance where staff will collect them.

8.   You can review your test before you leave the lab. You may not write down any information pertaining to test questions to take with you when you leave the MTLC after an exam. You may not share any test information with anyone who hasn’t taken the test.  Violators will be charged with academic misconduct. If you question the grading of any answer, you must meet with your instructor during the week following the test to discuss it.

9.   You may not leave your table during a test without permission. This includes getting water and using the restroom. If you must leave during the test, cell phones, Apple watches, all other technological devices, and a picture ID must be left in the testing area.

10.    Special MTLC Study Hours during test weeks: Monday 4pm-10pm, Tuesday – Thursday 5pm-10pm ONLY, Friday closed for testing.  The lab will be closed for studying, and open only for testing during Finals week.

If you miss a test, your zero score will be considered your lowest and will be dropped. However, only one zero test score may be dropped.

Attendance Policy

CLASS ATTENDANCE: Attendance for this course is mandatory. You are expected to attend all of your scheduled classes in their entirety and work on your math assignments.  Math 100 will meet every week on either a Monday or Wednesday.  Please ask your instructor if you are unclear.  The use of any electronic devices such as personal laptops, smart phones, or MP3 players is prohibited during class unless your instructor has planned a class activity with said device.  The MTLC - computer lab in B1 Tutwiler - is available for you to do homework and quizzes and get free tutoring. At the end of the semester one class attendance day will be dropped.

LAB ATTENDANCE:  Beginning the week of 8/22, including class attendance (50 minutes), each student is required to spend a total of 2.5 hours working on math coursework in the MTLC each week.  Time spent working on math shows a strong correlation with success in the course.  Students are not required to be in the MTLC (Math Lab) during their scheduled lab time, but may use the MTLC any time it is open to work on math assignments.  The MTLC is typically open for 65 hours each week and has plenty of computers as well as a staff of instructors and tutors to help individuals as needed.  Lab attendance is counted from 8:00am Monday to 4:30pm Friday each week.   Lab attendance is not required during test weeks. Credit for lab attendance is determined by ACT card swipes only. At the end of the semester one lab week attendance will be dropped.

Policy on Missed Exams & Coursework

MAKE-UP POLICY: Missed assignments will be scored zero.  No makeup tests will be given.

  • If learn or homework assignments are missed or not completed for any reason, you may request an extension within 14 days of the deadline.  If granted, you may complete the assignment after its deadline for a 30% reduction. Only the work submitted after the deadline will be penalized; all work submitted before the deadline gets full credit. Any assignments not attempted will be scored 0.  At the end of the semester, a minimum of your lowest 3 learns and lowest 3 homework scores will be automatically dropped.
  • If one of the 4 regular test is missed due to ANY circumstance, no makeup tests will be given. The zero score will be considered your lowest test score and will be dropped at the end of the semester.  Only one zero test score may be dropped.
  • Students who will miss work due to official University business must make other arrangements beforehand.
  • Since you have a limited number of drops for both learn and homework assignments and one drop test grade for the semester, it is important to take every assignment and test seriously, and to complete all assigned work on time.  Do not rely on earlier assignments as being your drops just in case a situation arises later in the semester where you might need to apply those drops. The selection of drop grades will not happen until the end of the semester after all assignments are past due.

Emergency Contact Information

UA's primary communication tool for sending out information is through its web site at www.ua.edu.  In the event of an emergency, students should consult this site for further directions. Additional course information will be posted using Blackboard Learn.

Severe Weather Guidelines

The guiding principle at The University of Alabama is to promote the personal safety of our students, faculty and staff during severe weather events. It is impossible to develop policies which anticipate every weather-related emergency. These guidelines are intended to provide additional assistance for responding to severe weather on campus.

UA is a residential campus with many students living on or near campus. In general classes will remain in session until the National Weather Service issues safety warnings for the city of Tuscaloosa. Clearly, some students and faculty commute from adjacent counties. These counties may experience weather related problems not encountered in Tuscaloosa. Individuals should follow the advice of the National Weather Service for that area taking the necessary precautions to ensure personal safety. Whenever the National Weather Service and the Emergency Management Agency issue a warning, people in the path of the storm (tornado or severe thunderstorm) should take immediate life saving actions.

When West Alabama is under a severe weather advisory, conditions can change rapidly. It is imperative to get to where you can receive information from the National Weather Service and to follow the instructions provided. Personal safety should dictate the actions that faculty, staff and students take.

The Office of University Relations will disseminate the latest information regarding conditions on campus in the following ways:

  • Weather advisory posted on the UA homepage
  • Weather advisory sent out through UA Alerts to faculty, staff and students
  • Weather advisory broadcast over WVUA at 90.7 FM
  • Weather advisory broadcast over Alabama Public Radio (WUAL) at 91.5 FM
  • Weather advisory broadcast over WVUA-TV/WUOA-TV, and on the website at http://wvua23.com/weather

In the case of a tornado warning (tornado has been sighted or detected by radar; sirens activated), all university activities are automatically suspended, including all classes and laboratories. If you are in a building, please move immediately to the lowest level and toward the center of the building away from windows (interior classrooms, offices, or corridors) and remain there until the tornado warning has expired. Classes in session when the tornado warning is issued can resume immediately after the warning has expired at the discretion of the instructor. Classes that have not yet begun will resume 30 minutes after the tornado warning has expired provided at least half of the class period remains.

Policy on Academic Misconduct

All students in attendance at The University of Alabama are expected to be honorable and to observe standards of conduct appropriate to a community of scholars. The University of Alabama expects from its students a higher standard of conduct than the minimum required to avoid discipline. At the beginning of each semester and on examinations and projects, the professor, department, or division may require that each student sign the following Academic Honor Pledge: “I promise or affirm that I will not at any time be involved with cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, or misrepresentation while enrolled as a student at The University of Alabama. I have read the Academic Honor Code, which explains disciplinary procedure resulting from the aforementioned. I understand that violation of this code will result in penalties as severe as indefinite suspension from the University.”

See the Code of Student Conduct for more information.
